For the last year, Winneshiek County has been struggling to keep a full staff of jailers. In January, we told you (http://www.decorahnews.com/archived-stories/2019/01/21186.html) the county was down three jailers. County officials worked hard and filled those positions. But now county Sheriff Dan Marx says the jail staff is down two employees -- one following the resignation of a two-year employee and another following a parting of ways with a new hire.
Marx told county supervisors Monday the issue is not wages and benefits. The county increased pay for jailers earlier this year and Marx says it is now offering "competitive" wages.
Advertisements for the two open positions have brought in a lot of applicants, Marx says, with several having criminal justice degrees. He says the hiring process has just begun, but he's looking forward to being back to full staff again.
