Winneshiek County is struggling to hire jailers

Staffers at the Winneshiek County Jail have been working overtime shifts in recent months as the Sheriff's Office struggles to hire enough jailers.

There's been an overall labor shortage in Winneshiek County in recent months, but it's especially hard to find jailers to hire.  Sheriff Dan Marx told county supervisors Wednesday the jail is down three jailers, which has forced existing jailers to work overtime shifts.

Marx says the Sheriff's Office "continues to struggle" to find qualified candidates--especially female candidates.  Recently there have been "more openings than applicants," says Marx.
