The Winneshiek County Board in September unanimously approved a revised County Zoning Ordinance, ending a process that had spanned across several years.
County officials had been told the zoning ordinance was out of date and needed revisions. Then came the issue of frac sand mining. Even though no companies had surfaced with plans for such mining, such operations were taking place in southeastern MInnesota, Western Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa.
But other issues were involved, as well. The ordinance changed the way campgrounds are regulated. It also spelled out procedures for conditional use permit applications, an issue which had come up several times in the past.
Members of the County Planning & Zoning Commission spent over a year studying and discussing the revisions. In the end, the revised zoning ordinance won the unanimous approval of county supervisors.
