While there won't be a primary for local candidates this spring, there will be a primary for state and federal positions

The filing deadline has passed for Republican and Democratic candidates to be on the June 3rd primary in Winneshiek County.  There are no contested primary races this spring--but that doesn't mean voters will have no choices to make.

The primary ballot will have five Republicans running for U.S. Senate--Sam Clovis, Joni Ernst, Mark Jacobs, Scott Schaben and Matt Whitaker, with the winner taking on Democrat Bruce Braley.

Five Democrats and three Republicans are running for Congress in Iowa's First District--Swati Dandekar, Anesa Kajtazovic, Pat Murphy, Dave O'Brien and Monica Vernon for the Dems and Rod Blum, Gail Boliver and Steve Rathje for the GOP.

Neither of the State Assembly districts in Winneshiek County will have primary contests.  In the fall Democrat Laura Hubka will face Republican Josh Byrners in District 51, while Democrat Rick Edwards will face Republican Darrel Branhagen in the District 55.
