Winneshiek County Board's District 3 Supervisor race features two long-time area residents

People living in District 3 of the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors are being asked to choose between two long-time residents with experience in community service.

Julie Askelson, the Republican Party's candidate, has held several jobs in education, including as Elementary School Administrator in the Allamakee Community School District.  She says, "I can be a positive leader," and says she understands "I'm persuadable" and consider all the details before making a decision.

Shirley Vermace, the Democratic Party's candidate, is currently serving her second term on the Decorah Parks & Recreation Board and says she is now "ready to take community service to the county level."

When asked "What are the risks of the campaign during this time?", Vermace answered, "Until we learn to work together, we won't be able to solve the problems that face us today." she says racism, homophobia and Islamaphobia keep us from working together to solve the problems which face us.

Askelson says the major part of the county budget--over $7 million in spending--is for roads.  She says she understand the multiple funding sources for roads--state, federal and local funds, which she says is important because local funds, while important, account for only one-third of all funding.
