The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors levies property taxes which are on behalf of Winneshiek Medical Center, so each year WMC officials give a report to the county board on the medical center's financial situation.
Of course, this year was "unprecedented," so the financial figures need to be studied through a different lens. Winneshiek Medical Center Chief Financial Officer Lynn Luloff told supervisors Monday that WMC is recovering from what she called "a quite challenging year." The medical center lost a total of around $4 million in the three-month span of March, April and May, when the ban on elective surgery because of COVID-19 was felt the strongest.
But Luloff says July, August and September financial figures for WMC show positive gains. She also says the $6.6 million given to Winneshiek Medical Center through the federal stimulus package will make a big difference--especially since it now appears that "loan" will be forgiven.
Luloff told supervisors it looks like WMC will have an operating gain of $1.3 million in the 2021 fiscal year, which will make the 2021 fiscal year a lot more positive.
