You tell them what you love. They pick your next read. This is the premise of the new "Book Bundle" program at Decorah Library.
Children's and Young Adult Librarian Rachael Button explained her inspiration for starting such a program in Decorah, saying, "What inspired me to do this program here was that people were already calling and asking for help with choosing books. It's a fun way to interact with patrons and serve families. It also deepens my knowledge of what the library has to offer and what it needs."
To participate, fill out one of the online forms found here. The forms asks for information such as your name, library card number, and then asks you to list 1 to 3 books and/or authors you enjoy. There's also a section to check mark what kind of genres you prefer.
A library staff member will then take your information and hand-select five books catered to your interests. The staff will get them ready, prepare a bag, and notify you when your bundle is ready for curbside pickup.
Button said, ""It's been interesting and fun to see what people like and want and then getting to respond to that."
The library will be limiting Book Bundles to 10 individuals or families per day until they get a feel for how this new service will work out and what they can handle.
"It's been a summer of pivoting, reimagining, and responding, but we're hearing positive feedback from families who have also had to pivot and re-envision their summers," Button note. "Summer reading might look different, but from what we've seen, people in this community are reading, creating, staying curious, and safely using of their public library."
