Decorah baseball players stand in unity with Charles City's baseball team
(story written by decorahnews.com's Paul Scott)
Jeremiah Chapman and the rest of the Charles City Comets played two baseball games against Decorah Tuesday night at Olejniczak Field.
On the heels of Chapman being the target of racial taunts during a game the previous week at Waverly, the focus Tuesday night in Decorah was on baseball--which is how it should have been. The only headlines created Tuesday night were for the sports page--not the 10:00 p.m. news or the front page.
Prior to the game, members of the Decorah Viking baseball team lined up on the same side of the field as the Charles City baseball team--a show of solidarity. When that was over, it was "play ball!" and Decorah fans were polite and well-behaved.
So what is next as Decorah continues to discuss the issue of racism? Does Tuesday night's results convince us "It couldn't happen here," or do we continue to figure out how to make sure we welcome everyone?
