Winneshiek County Supervisors on Monday criticized the process used so far in filling upcoming openings on the Veterans Affairs Commission.
There are two openings coming up on the Commission and five people have applied to serve—the two incumbents and three newcomers. However, none of the new applicants have been interviewed, according to county supervisors.
Supervisor John Beard accused the current commission of "wanting to keep it to the same old club." Beard added that he has heard concerns from several members of the veterans community that the same people are being appointed to the commission.
County Board Chair John Logsdon agreed with Beard and stated he'd like the three newcomers to be interviewed. That led to a unanimous move by the supervisors to send the issue back to the Veterans Affairs Commission for further work.
