


Students from across Iowa submitted their original creative writing compositions to a contest judged by the Iowa Reading Association—and five Decorah students have won state awards.
4th grader Oscar Grimstad won first place for his original short story, "The Kitty at Gull Lake"; 5th grader Brylee Hanson took first place with her original poem, "I Am From…"; 5th grader Teagan Menke won first place for her original short story, "Dear Lark"; 6th grader Carson Boehner took first place for his original poem, "Pen"; and 6th grader Olivia Quam took second place for her original short story, "Us."
Winners at the regional competition, sponsored by the Northeast Iowa Reading Association, were 4th grader Oak Pasche for his original poem, "Roller Coaster"; 7th grader Elsa Johnson for her original poem, "Life"; and 7th grader Oliver Brummel for his original short story, "I'm Sorry, Jon."
Winners have received a letter of congratulations and a certificate honoring their accomplishments.
