Winneshiek County will spend over $1.1 million on local gravel roads

Winneshiek County Supervisors have approved a budget of $1,141,873 for gravel to be used on local roads in 2020.  The county board approved a low bid from Bruening Rock Products on Monday.

Gravel prices are up around three percent from last year.  The work is expected to be finished around mid-August.

County Engineer Lee Bjerke says the program is a "bare bones" program, while County Supervisor Mark Kuhn says the smaller-than-normal program represents caution on the part of supervisors, who are worried about revenues in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.  Kuhn says the smaller gravel road program also was made possible by the large amount of work done on gravel roads last year.
