Property owners who don't want Winneshiek County to spray their roadsides must sign a form

If you own an organic farm or simply don't want Winneshiek County crews to spray chemical products along roadsides to control weeds, it's not enough to create a handmade sign and put it out near the edge of your property.

That's the message Winneshiek County Roadside Manager Corey Meyer wants to get out to property owners in the county.  Meyer says he respects the right of property owners to ask that spraying not be done along their roadsides.  But he says property owners must register with the county's Road Department so that crews know when to spray and when not to spray.

Meyer is also proactively trying to contact people who might want to request a no-spray area.  He'll be sending letters to all organic farmers in the county and will also contact Farmers Market vendors.  But property owners must take initiative and contact the County Engineer's Office to participate in this program.  Landowners will be asked to sign a form and apply for an official "No Spray" sign, which must be placed in the right-of-way.
