Eastern Iowa Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer spoke about a wide variety of topics at her town hall meeting at the Decorah Public Library on Friday afternoon--immigration reform, child care, Navy veterans and Medicaid privatization, to name a few.
But when she started talking about the impact of the Trump Administration's decision to grant waivers to many oil refineries so they won't have to blend biofuels, she got passionate about the topic. Finkenauer says she can see the impact the granting of biofuel waivers has had when she visits her family members. She has relatives with farms in the Sherill area and it's been tough for them, she told the Decorah audience.
Under the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard, oil refineries are required to blend billions of gallons of ethanol and other biofuels into the gasoline they sell. But the number of waivers granted to refineries has quadrupled under the Trump Administration.
Finkenauer says the biofuel waivers have come on the heels of the trade war with China. Although a tentative agreement has been reached to end that trade war, the impacts still are being felt in Iowa, said Finkenauer. She told the group in Decorah Friday afternoon, "We have so much more work to do."
