Starting March 2nd and running through March 25th, any Republicans or Democrats wishing to run for a Winneshiek County office can file nomination papers to run for election.

On the ballot will be the Winneshiek County Auditor, Winneshiek County Sheriff and Winneshiek County Treasurer positions.  The Treasurer position is for the two-year balance on the term, while the other two offices are for four-year terms.  Winneshiek County Treasurer Brenda Kreitzer says she plans to file nomination papers, while current Auditor Ben Steines and current Sheriff Dan Marx have not yet officially made an announcement.

Republican candidates for any of the above three offices need 97 signatures to be on the primary ballot, while Democratic candidates need 96 signatures.

Three positions on the Winneshiek County Board will be up for election in the primary.  District 3 County Supervisor Dean Thompson has announced he will not seek re-election.  Democrat Shirley Vermace has indicated her interest in the position.  Other Democratic candidates would need 23 signatures to earn a place on the ballot, while any Republican would need just 13 signatures.  District 4 Supervisor John Logsdon has said he will not seek re-election, while District 5 Supervisor Mark Kuhn has not yet announced his intentions.  Republican candidates for either District 4 or 5 would need 23 signatures on nomination papers to be on the primary ballot, while Democratic candidates would need 13 signatures.

For non-partisan elections, candidates for Winneshiek County Hospital Trustee would need 50 signatures on nomination papers; for the Winneshiek County Soil & Water Conservation District Board, 25 signatures; and for the Ag Extension Council, 25 signatures.  Candidates for Township Clerk or Trustee do not need to collect signatures, but must file an "Affidavit of Candidacy."
