Alex e-mails: "Some friends and I were having a discussion on Decorah's neighborhoods. We had all heard of "the Flats" but couldn't come up with any others. Do other areas have official or informal neighborhood names?"
The answer Person says: "The most common names for neighborhoods come from the names of the developers who built the houses in the neighborhood. For instance, you will hear about "the Dahly Addition," which includes Sunset Avenue, or "the Bruening Addition," which includes Walnut Street. It's somewhat rarer--but not unheard of--that a neighborhood takes its name from the scenery, such as "Pleasant Hill," which not surprisingly is on top of a hill, as are "Howdy Hills" in Freeport. "Goose Island," which includes Julian Street, is named after the geese which were common there.
So, yes, there are neighborhood names in Decorah. The Answer Person believes it's best to ask our readers to come up with more neighborhood names--after we nominate 'Woodland Acres," "High Point East," "Minowa Heights" and "Haugen Hummel" as other names used to describe neighborhoods in Decorah.
