State Senator Michael Breitbach: "I will not seek re-election"

State Senator Michael Breitbach has announced he has decided to retire and will not be running for re-election."

Breitbach, a Republican from Strawberry Point, announced earlier this week that he would retire at the end of his current term, adding, "It has been an honor to serve you for the last eight years."

The website Bleeding Heartland says State Representative Michael Bergan is expected to run for Breitbach's current seat instead of running for re-election in House District 55, but "he has not clarified his plans."

Democrat Matt Tapscott of Decorah has announced his candidacy for Breitbach's State Senate seat. At this time, no Democrat has announced a campaign for House District 55.
