Decorah School Board discusses costs of North Winneshiek's school building

Posted: Mon, Feb 10, 2020 8:29 PM

From July 1, 2019 until January 27, 2020, the Decorah School District spent close to $88,000 maintaining and updating the North Winneshiek school building just north of Decorah at 3495 N. Winn Road.

This total comes partially from daily maintenance expenses, such as running water and electricity, and custodial staff compensation and benefits. Adding to the sum are many one-time projects, such as rekeying the school, bringing closure to the septic system project, and the disposing of chemicals.

While the Board expects the next 6 months to be lower for overall expenses, one major project remains: draining the "lagoon" from the school grounds. This removal will cost a projected $41,000 to complete.

"It is important to keep these numbers in front of us to help us make good decisions for the future," said board member Krista Vanden Brink.
