Will another deputy be hired for the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office? Supervisors promise to keep talking

Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx told Winneshiek County Supervisors on Monday that his office could use another deputy because of the volume of work facing his office.

Giving one example, Marx said there are currently 158 warrants outstanding, waiting to be served.  Some of them are outstanding because they are for relatively minor crimes or because the subject is living a great distance from Winneshiek County, but the need is there, nevertheless.

County supervisors were receptive to Marx's request, but they said this coming year's county budget has more uncertainty attached to it than in previous years.

"We know there's a need (in the Sheriffs Office)," County Board Chair John Logsdon told Sheriff Marx.  Logsdon says there might be room in the county budget for adding another deputy, but he'd prefer waiting for six months before making a decision--a position supported by the other supervisors.

Concluded Logsdon on Monday, "There's wiggle room (in the budget), but we need to know how much wiggle."
