One of the members of the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors--Dean Thompson--is announcing that he will not seek re-election when his term ends late this year.
Thompson has served on the board for seven years so far. He was elected in 2012, defeating longtime County Board Chairman Les Askelson 936 to 791. Four years the two were also on the ballot--and Thompson beat Askelson a second time, 1,111 to 834.
During his two terms on the county board, Thompson and his four fellow board members worked to create a bipartisan, non-partisan atmosphere at county board meetings. He led the county's research into frac sand mining and pushed successfully for a moratorium on such mining until its possible effects in Winneshiek County could be researched. As a result of that research, the county board adopted new regulations for industrial mineral mining.
Thompson has been representing Supervisor District #3, which includes Canoe Township, the northern portion of Decorah Township and parts of the City of Decorah near Luther College.
