Decorah Sustainability Committee is outlining an ambitious green initiative for the City of Decorah

Members of the Decorah Sustainability Committee for the first time have publicly released the draft version of their sustainability plan for the community.

The document centers on eight visions for the future, involving topics such as energy use, land use, air and water and transportation.

City council members Emily Neal and Ross Hadley, who serve on the committee, led a discussion of the document Tuesday morning at an Energy Breakfast meeting.

The document calls for Decorah to become carbon neutral by 2040, to encourage walking and biking and to establish a Municipal Electric Utility Advisory Committee to work for passage of a municipal utility in Decorah.  It also proposes installing EV recharging stations around town, starting a "Resiliency Investment Fund" and reducing waste in Decorah by 40 percent by 2025.

The sustainability plan sets specific actions to take in the short-term and long-term and ways to measure any progress.  The plan has not yet been adopted by the City of Decorah, so Tuesday's public session was the first step in getting approval for the plan.
