


Decorah Police Chief David Smutzler has been honored by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
The College of Liberal Arts and Education at UWP has presented Smutzler with a Professional Achievement Award—one of just two such awards presented to LAE's alumni. Smutzler graduated from UW-Platteville with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1991.
After graduating from Plattevile, he furthered his education at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and later at the FBI National Academy. He has been a member of the Decorah Police Department for 28 years and currently serves as the Chief of Police. During his time with the Decorah Police Department, David worked as an investigator, a field training officer, a Special Response Team member and leader of the Special Response Team and a K-9 handler. He has held the supervisor titles of Sergeant, Captain and Assistant Chief of Police.
