Portland, Oregon visual artist and Luther College graduate Phyllis Yes decided to write her first play at the age of 75.  "Good Morning Miss America" characterizes a family dealing with aging parents with dementia and children who don't know quite how to navigate the situation. Directed by Winneshiek County resident and Luther graduate Katie O'Regan, "Good Morning Miss America" will be performed in October off-Broadway at the historic Theatre 80 on St. Marks Place in the lower east side of Manhattan.

It's a timely play that resonates with the audience and prompts important conversations about end of life issues. The play is described as "Compelling, poignant, honest, funny and sad. A perfect portrait of ailing parents, dysfunctional siblings, and the sadness and beauty of it all."

Local radio broadcaster and Wennes Communications owner Greg Wennes saw the production in Decorah last March and raved, "Great story, great characters, brilliant directing! Go see it in New York. It's worth the ticket and time."

The show's New York debut runs October 2nd through October 12th. The show's cast includes Waukon resident and Luther graduate Katie O'Regan, Winneshiek County resident Rick Nance, and Decorah resident Rachel Rattenborg.

There will be talkback sessions after the show on October 9th through 12th with Mayo Clinic physician Dr. Cory Ingram. Dr. Ingram is the founding medical director of Palliative Medicine in Population Health. He currently serves as the medical director of Hospice and Palliative Care for the southeast region of Minnesota. Dr. Ingram will speak about caretaking, family dynamics, love, and living with Alzheimer's and dementia.
