Some of the items at the Winneshiek County Courthouse
On Friday, the City of Decorah reversed a decision made earlier in the week to not put up American flags on Vietnam Veterans Day and two other observances involving veterans. Veterans groups had criticized the change in current practice to recognize those who served in America's wars.
The Vietnam War was especially felt in Decorah. The official name of the Army Reserve Center in Decorah is the "PFC Lloyd C. Wohlford, Jr. United States Army Reserve Center." The building was named for Lloyd Wohlford, Junior--the first Army fatality from Winneshiek County during the Vietnam war.
Winneshiek County officials brought mementos of Wohlford's life from the Army Reserve Center to the Winneshiek County Courthouse, preserving his memory. A large oak display case contains his Army uniform, his Decorah FFA jacket, a history of his life and other memorabilia which had been at the Army Reserve Center.
