What you need to know about Tuesday's referendum vote

Posted: Mon, Apr 30, 2018 1:08 PM

Decorah voters head to their polling places on Tuesday to determine the fate of a proposal to investigate a municipal electric utility.

Here's what you need to know about Tuesday:

"What are we voting on?"  The actual wording of Tuesday's ballot is: "Shall the City of Decorah, in the County of Winneshiek, State of Iowa, be authorized to establish a municipally-Owned electric utility?"

"When do I vote?"  The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

"Where do I vote?"  The City of Decorah is divided into five wards.  Ward 1 votes at Decorah City Hall, Ward 2 at the Winneshiek County Courthouse, Ward 3 at First Lutheran Church and both Ward 4 and Ward 5 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.  A map showing the boundaries of each ward is linked at the bottom of this story.

"Anything else I should know?"  Yes, definitely!  Voters are now required to show proof of identity to poll workers before they can vote.  If you are already registered to vote at your current address, one of the following forms of ID is considered adequate: an Iowa Driver's License (or DOT issued Non-Driver ID Card), a passport, a military or veteran ID card or a Voter ID Card (only issued to registered voters without a Drivers License or DOT ID).  If you are not registered to vote, or have moved since your last registration, you will need to provide proof of identification and proof of residency.  For a complete list of acceptable documents, contact the County Auditor at (563) 382-5085 or auditor@co.winneshiek.ia.us.
