Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andy McGuire says she wants to care for others

Andy McGuire is a doctor, which might be why she spoke Thursday at the Winneshiek County Democratic Party's fall fundraiser about "the power of caring for others."  McGuire told the group she believes Iowans are not getting a fair shake because state government is putting profit ahead of people.

McGuire was born and raised in Waterloo, received her Master's in Business Administration and became a Chief Medical Officer at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.  She was chair of the Iowa Democratic Party from 2014-2016.

McGuire told Winneshiek County Democrats "health care is a right, not a privilege."  She said the privatization of the administration of Medicaid in Iowa has put 600,000 Iowans at risk.  She also promised to restore funding to Planned Parenthood if she is elected governor.

McGuire did discuss other issues as well.  She said "people are struggling" because the state's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.  She also noted that the Iowa quarter carries the slogan "A Foundation in Education" and asked the group, "Do you think that's what we're still doing?"
