Ask Mr. Answer Person: "What's being done about Decorah's deer problem?"

These deer enjoyed a leisurely visit to the yard of John and Sondy Carver of Decorah

(Scott e-mails Mr. Answer Person: "I have not heard any more discussion from our city council members regarding the deer problems with in our community. They seem to have put the issue on the back burner. I see deer daily walking through the yards and in the evenings bedding down in residential yards. Many seem to have regular patterns coming from the bluffs crossing the river and then coming across the flood levee to feast on flowers and gardens and bird feeders.  We have a problem here that just continues to get worse each year and our city is not pursuing the issue."):

Mr. Answer Person says: "The deer population issue was discussed quite a bit last year by Decorah City Council members.  As we reported at the time,  city council members "ran out of time to reach agreement before the bow hunting deer season arrived, so instead of having a DNR-supervised program, they decided to publicize city property owners who would allow bow hunters to hunt on their property."  Six property owners were willing to allow hunters on their land, but only one of them followed through--and no known deer harvests have been reported, although some may have occurred.

Decorah City Council member Chuck Lore--who led the drive to have deer hunting within city limits--tells Mr. Answer Person he's ready to start over again on a deer program.  Stay tuned."
