New Highways 9 & 52 intersection will be built without needing detours

By the end of next year, the Highway 9 and 52 intersection in southwest Decorah should have a new look--all without requiring motorists to use a detour.

Iowa DOT District 2 design engineer Nick Humpal tells decorahnews.com the DOT will let bids on the project in January.  Construction on the new intersection would begin as soon as weather conditions would allow--probably in April.  It will take the entire 2017 construction season to complete the replacement of the current intersection--even though the new intersection configuration will very closely duplicate today's intersection design. The most noticeable change will be the removal of the raised stop sign islands and the median being replaced with painted islands.

Humpal says no detours will be required during construction--temporary lanes will be built to move the intersection slightly to the southwest, but traffic will be maintained through the construction zone without any detours.
