With a new Dollar General Store and Subway restaurant now open in Calmar, city officials are turning their attention to the next development.
Farmers Union Cooperative already owns 25 acres of property on 175th Street on Calmar's northwest side. It has now reached a tentative agreement to purchase two other nearby properties. But one of the two smaller parcels of land is not within the Calmar city limits, a V-shaped parcel encompassing half an acre.
Calmar Development representative Don Wurtzel met with county supervisors Monday to see whether they would be willing to establish an urban renewal district for the small parcel of land that would be similar to the urban renewal district the City of Calmar wants to set up for the property inside the city. County supervisors are asking for a legal review of the agreement and are expected to give their approval next Monday.
