Decorah artists win awards in Vesterheim folk art exhibition

Several Decorah artists were among the award-winners in the judging at the annual "National Exhibition of Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition" at Vesterheim.

Laura Demuth won Best of Show in the Weaving category with "Handspun Home," a coverlet in rya and double weave techniques. Demuth is a Vesterheim Gold Medalist in weaving.

Shawn Sersland won a Blue Ribbon in the Woodworking—Chip Carving and Kolrosing category for a chip-carved box.

Zach Heine won an Honorable Mention in the Woodcarving—Figure Carving category for his "Dala Horse" carved figure.

Stanley Finholt won an Honorable Mention in the Woodworking—Open category for a turned boxelder bowl.

Judges this year for weaving were Veronna Capone, Gold Medal weaver from Brookings, South Dakota, and Katherine Larson, weaving instructor and author of "Woven Coverlets of Norway," from Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Judges for woodworking were Paul Carlson, Gold Medal woodworker and knifemaker from McAllister, Montana; Rebecca Hanna, Gold Medal woodworker from Decorah, Iowa; and Doug Eckheart, retired Professsor of Art from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa.
