Paul e-mails: "Did I miss something? The Trout pond near Twins Springs has been drained. The DNR always put on a program and stocked that pond for the "Take A Kid Fishing" weekend in June. What's up with that? If they don't plan on refilling, do you know if they are doing a program somewhere else?"
Mr. Answer Person says: "The trout pond in Twin Springs Park always gets drained each fall. That's an effort on the part of Decorah Park-Rec and the Iowa DNR, who jointly manage the area, to keep weeds from choking the pond.
The pond will be refilled some day in the next two weeks because--as you point out--the DNR holds a "Take A Kid Fishing" event in June. We can tell you that the event this year will be held on Saturday, June 4th--and that the DNR will be stocking the pond with trout that very same day.
The "Take A Kid Fishing" promotion will run for three days-- Friday, June 3rd, through Sunday, June 5th. During these three days, Iowa residents may fish for and possess trout without a fishing license or trout fee. Lure restrictions (where applicable), length and possession limits still apply.
Happy fishing!
