The Decorah Public Library History Book Group in March will be discussing Peter Ackroyd's "Rebellion: The History of England from James I to the Glorious Revolution." Copies of the book are now available at the front desk of the library.
The history book group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24th, on the second floor of the library to discuss the book. Luther College history professor Dr. Edward Tebbenhoff will lead the discussion. The group is open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend.
The Stuart monarchy brought England and Scotland into one country, albeit one still marked by political divisions that echo to this day. More importantly, perhaps, the Stuart era was marked by the cruelty of civil war and the killing of a king. Oliver Cromwell, Parliament's great military leader and England's only dictator, began his career as a political liberator but ended it as much of a despot as the king he executed.
Up next: the DPL History Book Group will discuss John David Unruh's "The Plains Across: the Overland Emigrants and the Trans-Mississippi West, 1840-1860."
