Motorists in the Decorah area are getting more good news: the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Decorah--which had been $2.09 less than two months ago--has now dropped to $1.74 or $1.75.
That price puts Decorah gas prices below the average gasoline price in Iowa--$1.84 a gallon. Prices range from $1.58 a gallon in Independence to $2.29 a gallon in Spencer.
Decorah's average gas price is lower than that of all but ten of the 50 states. California has the most expensive gas--$2.86 a gallon--while Missouri has the U.S.'s cheapest gas at $1.64 a gallon.
Analysts say the lower gasoline prices start with a glut of oil being produced at the wells, then also include a lot of oil being processed into gasoline. Not only that, but the oil industry for the most part has finished winter maintenance on their refineries--so there's unlikely to be any interruptions in gas production. That could lead to another 10 to 20-cent drop in the price of a gallon of gas.
