When the Decorah Swimming Pool's water slide was removed last spring because of the recommendation of two engineering firms, Decorah Park-Rec Department staffers were worried about the impact the loss of the water slide would have on pool attendance. It turns out it wasn't as big of a factor as feared.
The swimming pool annual report shows a total attendance this summer of 24,885. That's actually higher than 2014's attendance of 24,412--although almost 9,000 lower than 2012's swimming pool attendance.
802 people used the pool on June 9th--the busiest day of the summer. Just 50 people used the pool on the last day of the regular season.
User fees generated $142,491 in revenue for the pool, but expenses totaled $232,796, so more than $90,000 in property tax support was needed--something that happens in even the best-attended swimming seasons.
A new water slide will be installed in time for the start of the 2016 swimming season at the pool, even though the Park-Rec Board is taking a little extra time to review the bids it got on a new water slide.
