The Iowa Transportation Commission, meeting at the Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, today approved $3.4 million for six State Recreational Trails Program projects.
The six projects include the Turkey River Recreational Corridor Trail, which will receive a $750,000 state grant. The money will help pay for a $1,136,000 project that would build a bridge over the Turkey River and 6,600 feet of additional recreational trail. The project would extend the current Turkey River Recreational Corridor Trail by connecting three other trails--a 4.8 mile paved trail from Elgin to Clermonth; 2.5 miles of trail in Clermont and 7 miles of trail in Gilbertson Park.
The Iowa Department of Transportation received 43 grant applications totaling almost $23.5 million in requests.
