The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department says 30-year-old Nicholas Pierce of Cresco was traveling on Highway 9 around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday near the Howard and Winneshiek County line when a deer started crossing the road, but fell in front of Pierce's vehicle.
Pierce was able to avoid hitting the deer--which was the good news. The bad news is that 57-year-old Amil D. Felper of Riceville was driving a semi in back of Pierce. Felper couldn't stop in time and hit the rear of Pierce's car, causing $6,500 in damages.
Neither driver was injured nor was anyone ticketed.
