Renewed grant funding by the American Legion of Iowa will support scholarships for veterans who are NICC students in the 2014-2015 academic year.
U.S. military veterans, spouses of veterans and dependent children of veterans may qualify for the tuition assistance to support their education at NICC. The NICC Foundation received the $2,000 grant from the American Legion to provide two to four veteran students with $500-$1000 scholarship awards to help pay for their educational expenses.
NICC serves approximately 135 veteran students, spouses and dependent children each year in credit programs at the Calmar and Peosta campuses. Although veteran students receive educational benefits through the Veterans Administration for their military service, the funding often does not cover all student expenses.
NICC provides services and support for its student veteran population. In 2014 and for the fourth consecutive year, NICC earned a place on the Military Friendly Schools listing, a distinction that honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's veterans as college students. G.I. Jobs, an online resource for U.S. military personnel, compiles the annual listing.
