The Winneshiek County Cattlemen are taking applications until November 7th for a program that is awarding $1,000 to help young people get a start in the beef industry.
Under the "Beef Opportunity Program," up to three students in 6th through 10th grade will receive $1,000 toward the purchase of a breeding heifer of their choice. The heifer purchase must be a registered breed female and meet the requirements of the cattlemen.
The money will be reimbursed to the young person after a bill of sale is presented to the WCCA. Also, when the recipient returns to the Winneshiek County Fair the following year to exhibit a cow/calf pair, the recipient will be awarded an additional $500.
Applications can be picked up at the Winneshiek County Extension Office or from FFA advisors or 4-H leaders. You can contact Micayla Christopher for more details at christopher.k.micayla@gmail.com
