Ask Mr. Answer Person: "What's going on with the proposed Community Center in Decorah?"

(Several readers have asked for an update on the status of the proposed Community Center in Decorah)

Mr. Answer Person says: "If you haven't heard much lately about the proposed Community Center in Decorah, it's because, frankly, not much has changed recently.

The most important recent development was the citywide citizen survey done by the City of Decorah.  It showed the public supports a Community Center--but only if it doesn't raise taxes.

That feedback has ended any talk of a free-standing Community Center.  Members of the Decorah Parks and Recreation Board as a result have been focusing their energy on looking for other groups that might be willing to do a cooperative project.  But at this point, nothing is on the horizon--Thursday night's Park-Rec Board meeting agenda doesn't even list the Community Center as one of the items to be discussed.
