When is the Decorah Swimming Pool closing for the year?

Decorah Parks & Recreation Department officials say they tried—they really tried—to extend the schedule of the Decorah Swimming Pool beyond its scheduled closing on Sunday, but were unsuccessful.

"It's not so much the cost, it's the manpower," said Park-Rec Director Andy Nimrod.  He says high schoolers who have been working as guards at the pool during the summer start classes on Wednesday and also are involved in cross country, football and swimming practices after school.  Luther College students with lifeguarding credentials won't return until around Labor Day.  Nimrod says there have been discussions about hiring adult lifeguards—but many of those have said they are not interested in working nights and weekends—when the need for lifeguards is the greatest.

As it stands now, the Decorah Swimming Pool will be open special hours for swimming through Saturday and then will close on Sunday after holding the special yearly "Dog Swim."
