Former State Assemblyman John Beard has officially announced his candidacy for the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors.
Beard has filed nomination papers as a Democrat to run against incumbent Republican supervisor Dennis Karlsbroten. Beard served as State Representative from 2008 to 2010. Beard lost his campaign for re-election to Bob Hager in 2010, then lost a campaign for State Senate in 2012.
Beard and his wife, RoJene. have three children. He is a member of the Winneshiek County Conservation Board, Trout Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.
In making his announcement, Beard stated, "As I visit with folks about our county and its future I am pleased that so many of them talk about the "quality of life" we enjoy here...they know that all these things: natural resources, strong schools, cultural and historical amenities are vital to our economy and our well being."
Beard said people have shared their concerns as well: "A remarkable number of people I questioned expressed concerns about frac sand mining. Quite a few people, especially young families, felt a lack of affordable housing. Many people were concerned about our roads and bridges. I share these feelings."
