The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, headquartered in Waterloo, has selected Decorah resident Edna Schrandt as one of three winners of the #Giving Tuesday contest.
Participants were asked to give unselfishly to another individual, non-profit organization or community through volunteering or donating.
Schrandt reached out to the Winneshiek County Nurses, who told her about a woman who needed help traveling to medical appointments in Iowa City throughout the winter months. Schrandt donated gas cards, warm mittens, a scarf and a stocking cap to the Winneshiek County Nurses, to give to the woman.
The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa recognized her work by donating a $500 check to present to her charity of choice. She selected the Winneshiek County Agricultural Association, which runs the Winneshiek County Fair.
"At first I didn't think I was making that big of an impact by helping out just one person," said Schrandt. "Boy, was I wrong! It just goes to show even a small token of kindness can go a long, long way."
