Steyer Bridge repair may be a challenge for City

Repairing the historic Steyer Bridge in Decorah might be more difficult than first thought.

The bridge I located on Twin Springs Road, almost underneath Highway 52.  It was built in 1875 by Decorah stone mason Michael Steyer and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

City of Decorah officials had approved paying $80,000 to repair the bridge.  The city hired Erdman Engineering and Decorah stone mason John Dingley for the project.  But as the contractors got ready to begin the project, they have discovered more issues with the structure.  Therefore, the city's Streets Committee has scheduled a meet for later in September to discuss the problems with the bridge.
