Volunteers are helping to pull invasive weeds at the Decorah Butterfly Garden

Posted: Mon, Aug 12, 2013 5:33 PM

A group of volunteers has begun working at the Decorah Community Prairie. Volunteer organizer Jerri Osenga says this summer's high waters and strong winds have been rough on the City Butterfly Garden, allowing invasive plants to take over part of the garden.:

The group of volunteers has begun working every Monday morning from 9 until 11 at the Butterfly Garden to cut back invasive plants such as the cup plant, big bluestem and Canadian thistle.  Osenga says Roundup is then sprayed on the roots of the weeds—a type that is non-toxic after 3 hours.

If you can help, bring tools like clippers, rakes and brooms to the butterfly garden, or contact Osenga at 277-1064 for more information.
