64-year-old Nancy Elsbernd of Decorah has entered "guilty" pleas to five counts of first degree theft in connection with the disappearance of money from Aase Haugen Homes.
(Note): We originally wrote that Elsbernd received a 50-year sentence. That was INCORRECT, because we mistakenly wrote down that the five ten-year terms were "consecutive," when they were "concurrent," meaning they would run at the same time. Here is the corrected language: Elsbernd received a 10-year prison sentence, but that was suspended and she will serve up to five years on probation instead.
Elsbernd was also ordered to pay a total of $6,750 in fines (Note): The court order said this fine would be "suspended during compliance with the terms of probation.".
Elsbernd told police she had been taking money from the nursing home since 2006.
