An article in the latest edition of The Economist magazine is titled "Why is Latin making a comeback?" The magazine hypothesizes that Twitter is a leading cause for the resurgence of popularity of Latin because Latin's succinctness makes it ideal for Twitter's 140-character messages.
Luther College Classics professor Phillip Freeman says Latin is thriving at Luther College. Luther College has a record 75 students signed up so far for this fall's "Elementary Latin" class, with another 17 signed up for advanced Latin. This is more than double the numbers of just a few years ago.
Freeman says the number of Classics majors has also grown from an average graduating class of two or three per year to eleven last year.
