Luther College is participating in the 2013 Campus Conservation Nationals, a nationwide electricity and water use reduction competition.
The competition started MOnday and will run through March 15th. It challenges students from more than 200 universities and colleges to achieve the greatest reductions in their residence hall over the three week period.
This is Luther's third year participating in CCN. In the previous two years competitions combined, Luther saved a total of 7,108 kilowatt hours and 14,066 gallons of water.
Luther is looking to increase participation in this year's competition by offering a $500 prize to the residence hall that reduces the most water and electricity, when averaged. In addition, one student from each residence hall that shows active involvement in the competition will win a $10 gift card to a local Decorah business.
To encourage electricity and water savings, there will be a series of scheduled "black-out" events, designed to get students to turn off appliances and lights in their individual rooms and share electricity.
