The State Senate race between John Beard and Michael Breitbach cost $500,000, while the State Assembly race between Roger Thomas and Michael Klimesh cost nearly $300,000. But the 12 candidates for Winneshiek County Board combined spent less than $15,000 last fall.
That's the summary of campaign financing reports filed in January with the Iowa Secretary of State's Office.
The reports show that six candidates--John Franzen, Les Askelson, John Logsdon, Clark Goltz, Lonnie Piefce and Mark Kuhn--spent less than $750 and didn't even have to file a campaign financing report.
(UPDATE: corrected figure for (Dean Thomspon): Of the remaining six candidates, only Rachel Vagts spent more than $1,600. Campaign financing reports show her campaign cost $3,897, while Dean Thompson spent $1,769, Dennis Karlsbroten spent $1,508, Bill Ibanez spent $1,450, Floyd Ashbacher spent $1,262 and Bob Watson spent $1,036. That's a total of just under $11,000 spent by those six candidates, with the other six candidates spending a total of no more than $4,500.
