Winneshiek Medical Center offering a new digital mammography service

Winneshiek Medical Center is now offering a new digital mammography service.  The new technology uses lower doses of radiation but at the same time produces sharper images.  In addition, the new mammography technique features breast cushions to provide a more positive experience for women.

Research shows that discomfort is a major reason women don't get regular mammograms.  A study in a trade journal found that 75 percent of the women surveyed who had used the new technology reported a reduction in discomfort.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer.  While medical experts disagree on their recommendations of when to start scheduling mammograms and how often to have mammograms, all experts agree that early detection of breast cancer gives patients a much better chance of survival.
