A dangerous winter storm is forecast to slam into the Decorah area over the next 36 hours, causing dangerous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service is predicting 14 to 18 inches of snow will fall across portions of northeast Iowa into southwest and central Wisconsin.  It has issued a Blizzard Warning for very strong winds and very heavy snow.

Northwest winds of 20 to 30 miles an hour are forecast for Thursday, with gusts up to 45 miles an hour.

The combination of the winds and snow will lead to blizzard conditions across much of southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa and southwest into central Wisconsin.

The National Weather Service says travel should be avoided on Thursday, since many roads will be impassable.  That means even emergency vehicles will have trouble getting around.

Concludes the NWS: "Stay inside - Stay safe."
