It might be a good idea to call the Winneshiek County Recorder's Office ahead of time to make an appointment to get a U.S. passport.
County Recorder Teresa Bockman says her office recently passed an inspection by the U.S. State Department with flying colors. However, due to heightened security measures across the United States, the Department of State has taken measures to remove any vulnerability present during the passport application process. One of those steps is in regard to offices that can also issue Birth Certificates. Because of that, Bockman can only issue birth certificates and not passports. The only Recorder's Office employee who can issue passports is Jayne Schultz. Since the Recorder's Office is down to one agent for passports, Bockman says you may want to call ahead and make sure Jayne Schultz is in the office.
Bockman says her office is sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause you. Please contact our office at 563-382-3486 for any questions you may have.
